Each character has a proficiency bonus, a single number that represents how good they are at the stuff they’re good at.
The number is added to Skill Checks or Attack Rolls for skills and weapons that you’re Proficient in.
Usually, your proficiency bonus is added at most once. So if 2 effects allow you to add your proficiency to a roll, you only add it once.
Your proficiency bonus increases with level:
— From level 1, it starts at +2
— At level 5, it increases to +3
— At level 9, it increases to +4
— At level 13, it increases to +5
— Finally, at level 16, it creases to +6
For example. If you’re proficient in Persuasion, for Persuasion checks like convincing a bouncer to let you in the club, Your Persuasion Skill Check would be a d20 + Your Proficiency Bonus.
If you have Expertise in Persuasion, it would be a d20 + (Your Proficiency Bonus x 2)
